Contemplation of Life on Earth as a Human

Updated: Apr 10, 2022

We are born on earth as a human and are able to process experiences with complex mind complexities, some of us may think how and why we got here and how all this life started, what is the purpose of life, or who and what are we fundamentally? These questions are naturally emerge among the curious mind, it is normal for us to question our own existence as we are conscious and have the need to build sense of identity

To add perspective, maybe it's a good idea to first start with the origins of the history of life on this earth.

"For many years biologists assumed that the complex life we encounter today is an inevitable consequence of the process of evolution, but that's not the case, since the appearance of simple cells there would have been a lag for the first 2.5 billion years before suddenly complex life. began to evolve as if the existence of complex life was just a natural accident.

If cells slowly evolved into more complex life over billions of years, all types of transitional cells from simple to complex should still exist. But nothing. On the one hand there are small bacteria and archaea, known as prokaryotes.

On the other hand there are large and heavy eukaryotes, Eukaryotes are typical single-celled creatures, such as amoebas, about much larger than bacteria and capable of carrying out more complex functions. Prokaryotes themselves never turn into anything more complex than a group of identical cells. All eukaryotic cells evolved from a common ancestor without this life would still exist in the form of simple microbes.

The momentous event that occurred had occurred about 2 billion years ago, when one cell somehow ended up in another cell. The identity of the host cell of the other cells is unclear, but we do know that the cell engulfs the bacteria, which begins life and the environment within it. Somehow find a way to live together peacefully, and eventually form a symbiotic relationship called endosymbiosis.

Through co-evolution over several generations, endosymbiotic eventually becomes an organelle called mitochondria that performs an important function for cells, namely energy in cells, which then with energy from these mitochondria the cells can grow larger. Mitochondria also take advantage of their ancestors, namely being able to rely on themselves

Another case of endosymbiosis created creating chloroplasts, organelles that support plants and convert sunlight into sugar in a process called photosynthesis. Endosymbionts in this case are photosynthetic bacteria, which first appeared on Earth about 2.8 billion years ago. These things gave rise to the emergence of complex multicellular life forms.

The nucleus of the cell, where eukaryotes store most of their DNA is another important event. The nucleus of the cell may have been created by another endosymbiosis, possibly from a virus.

Eukaryotic cells also acquire other organelles, such as the endoplasmic reticulum, where proteins are made, and the Golgi apparatus, which delivers these proteins to the target cell."

Knowing that life emerge & evolve in unique way and then looking back at our lives now, as if everything around us was real.

We know that from a natural perspective maybe we are human beings. one among many special creatures with unimaginable potential, just try to think of how simple microbial life given a time can turn into living creatures that build skyscrapers, move places with vehicles made of steels, civilizations that are able to form sustainable social governance and create works of art with various forms, and here we are the result of these complex natural events comes from the microbial cell.

But maybe after reading this article we go back to our own lives and proceed with the existing financial suffering or the boredom of life, physical misery and so on that are an intimate part of each of us' lives, it's just that... a little learning about where we come from can actually change our perspective even if only for brief of time or not...

We know that we are limited being we don't get to live here forever, one day we'll return to mother earth, but the privilege to be alive, to experience conscioussness of life even for just a while, is indeed an evolutionary gift

I mean who would have guessed that a simple cell could turn out to be this complex, or who would have guessed that a sea of primordial chemistry suddenly led to life that was so consequential to the fate of the planet Earth itself. Biologically we may know a glimpse of the history of life

A being that capable of questioning its own existence, searching for deeper value other than just mere survival. A human being.
